Nearby Areas
Church and Moffat Mission at Kuruman
The Kuruman Moffat Mission at Seodin outside Kuruman, South Africa, traces its establishment, by the London Missionary Society, to 1816, although the first settlement was not where the mission now stands but at ‘New Lattakoo’.
Boesmansgat Sinkhole
As another of the Northern Cape Province’s fascinating natural wonders, Boesmansgat certainly promises visitors an impressive sight. This is a vertical cave that is acclaimed as being the sixth-deepest submerged cave in the world, also known as a sinkhole. It is situated on a farm called Mount Carmel, about 55 kilometres south of the town of Kuruman, within naturally gorgeous surrounds.
Roaring Sands
The White and Roaring Sands are 70km southwest of town. Red sand is blown here into dunes from the Kalahari which is bleached by the water removing the iron oxide. During dry weather the resulting smooth sand vibrate to make a roaring sound. Lightning often creates fulgurites when it strikes the sand. These are tube like glazed bits of sand fused by the heat in sections as long as 2m.
Wonderwerk Cave
This remarkable cave is located 45 km south of Kuruman, and 43 km north of Danielskuil.
The cave is a solution cavity, which means that it was filled with water millions of years ago. The space had been carved into the dolomite limestone of the 2.3-billion year-old Ghaap Plateau.
